Albuquerque is the largest city in the state of New Mexico. Albuquerque is the county seat of Bernalillo County. Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as a small Spanish settlement on the banks of the Rio Grande and was named for the Duke of Alburquerque.
The city population of Albuquerque was 545,852 as of the 2010 Census and a metropolitan population of 907,775. Albuquerque is the sixth fastest-growing in the United States.
Albuquerque is home to the University of New Mexico (UNM), Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland Air Force Base, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, and Petroglyph National Monument.

Albuquerque History
The first Spanish explorers arrived in Albuquerque in approximately 1540 under General Francisco de Coronado. Alburquerque was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost. Alburquerque was named in honour of the Duke of Alburquerque, the first “r” in “Alburquerque” was dropped in the 19th century. The city’s size and population began to grow in 1880 when the railroad arrived. Today, Albuquerque is a major Southwestern city with a diverse population.
